William Moncrief dies by Adam Beeson Managing Editor Dr. J William Moncrief, eleventh Presi dent of Brevard College and predecessor [to President Van Horn, died April 8. Bill, as he was known by friends and family, was a distinguished science scholar and educa tor. Dr. Moncrief became Brevard College’s interim president in July 2001 before being named president in November 2001. He re tired as president in September 2002. “Bill was an articulate, artistic and com passionate person,” President Drew Van Horn said. “He was a man grounded in his Christian faith and was surrounded by a loving and charming family. He left such a tremendous impact on Brevard College and will be missed by all of us.” Raised in Sylvania, Ga., Dr. Moncrief received a B.A. at Emory University in 1963 before obtaining his Ph.D. in Physical Chemistry at Harvard in 1966, where he later returned as a Teaching Fellow. He brought Brevard College 35 years of academic and administrative experience in higher educa- see Moncrief, page 2 Former BC President Moncrief Track competes at Cumberland College by Justin Holstein Staff Writer On Saturday, April 9, the men and women’s track teams made the three hour and fifteen minute trip to Williamsburg, Kentucky for the 10'*' Annual Cumberland College Track & Field Invitational. The competition at the meet was tough. The men’s team was in competition against fourteen other squads, including NAIA powerhouses Cumberland College and Virginia Intermont, as well as NCAA D2 member Morehead State University. The women’s team competed against thirteen other schools. With little shade around the track, the heat affected the runners. The tempera tures in the morning went from low to mid 70’s and then in the afternoon to the low 80’s. While some team members ran great times because of the good competition, some times were off pace due to the heat. The first event of the day for the tornados was 3000m steeple chase, run by freshman Jesse McEntire and junior Matt Owen. In his first time ever running the event, McEntire ran a time of 10:14, only seven seconds behind the eighth place finisher McEntire finished twelfth. Owen see Track, page 12 Campus Activites Board sponsors murder mystery performance by Heather Hinkle Staff Writer On Friday April 8, Brevard College had a murder to solve. BC and Campus Activities Board (CAB) invited About Town Tours from Charlotte, NC to perform a murder mystery. The theme “Quicker than the Eye,” was about a magician. The Amazing Roberto Clappini, who was murdered and everyone had a motive to kill him. Each table received a packet from the police station that included a suspe list and a newspaper article. The detective introduced us to the suspects. Louise LaSage was Clappini’s agent.
